about

The words are new, based on Psalm 137, Jeremiah 29 and various part of Ezekiel. The Tune is from the old Irish drinking song, 'the Juice of the Barley'

lyrics

So, Babylon’s waterways watered the land,
And we worked on the farms that we’d transformed from sand,
And down by the river we sat, and we cried,
When we thought back to Zion and all who had died;

Chorus: They said,
‘Sing us a song of your homeland;
Sing us a song of your God.’

We hung up our harps on the trees that we’d grown,
And we looked across fields of the seeds that we’d sown,
And we swore that no more would we sing till we’re free,
But our captors demanded we sing out with glee;

But how can we sing of our God far from home?
So far from Jerusalem’s temple and throne.
Our bones are dried up, and our hope is all gone,
And we’re cut off completely from all that we’ve known;

A letter from Judah was sent to us here;
Jeremiah the prophet, his message was clear.
Seek peace and prosperity, there where you stand,
And our children will see the Lord stretch out his hand.

Along came Ezekiel, prophet and priest,
Acting out prophecies here on the street.
He spoke of a day when God’s law fills our hearts;
With God’s breath in our lungs, we’re no longer apart;

So Heaven’s small waterways start to be seen;
A trickle that grows to a life-giving stream,
And far from the temple a river so wide,
And a land where our God can forever reside;
