Hymns in the Time of Lockdown

by Pete Brazier

1.
1. Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart, be all else but naught to me, save that thou art; be thou my best thought in the day and the night, both waking and sleeping, thy presence my light. 2. Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord; be thou my great Father, thy child let me be; be thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee. 3. Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight; be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might; be thou my soul’s shelter, be thou my strong tower: O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power. 4. Riches I heed not, nor earth’s empty praise: be thou mine inheritance now and always; be thou and thou only the first in my heart: O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art. 5. High King of heaven, thou heaven’s bright Sun, O grant me its joys after victory is won; Great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all.

1. Take us to the mountain, Lord Take us to the shore Take us to the edges of The world we’ve known before 2. Meet us at the setting sun Meet us at the dawn Meet us in the places where Our spirits are reborn 3. Call us to the deserts Lord Call us to the sea Call us in our hearts to find The people we should be 4. Find us in our prayers o Lord Find us in our song Find us in our searching for The place that we belong 5. Send us out for justice Lord Send us out for love Send us out to spread the news Of Grace that comes from above

So Babylon 03:29
So, Babylon’s waterways watered the land, And we worked on the farms that we’d transformed from sand, And down by the river we sat, and we cried, When we thought back to Zion and all who had died; Chorus: They said, ‘Sing us a song of your homeland; Sing us a song of your God.’ We hung up our harps on the trees that we’d grown, And we looked across fields of the seeds that we’d sown, And we swore that no more would we sing till we’re free, But our captors demanded we sing out with glee; But how can we sing of our God far from home? So far from Jerusalem’s temple and throne. Our bones are dried up, and our hope is all gone, And we’re cut off completely from all that we’ve known; A letter from Judah was sent to us here; Jeremiah the prophet, his message was clear. Seek peace and prosperity, there where you stand, And our children will see the Lord stretch out his hand. Along came Ezekiel, prophet and priest, Acting out prophecies here on the street. He spoke of a day when God’s law fills our hearts; With God’s breath in our lungs, we’re no longer apart; So Heaven’s small waterways start to be seen; A trickle that grows to a life-giving stream, And far from the temple a river so wide, And a land where our God can forever reside;
4.
1. The entry to the holy city On a donkey, in that hour, Was an act of open challenge, To the ones who held the power. Hosanna in the highest heaven; Jesus you have come to save. Blessèd in the name of God and Blessed to lift us from the grave. 2. The politics of such a moment; Humble love and strength combined; Not a passive bowing down, but Sacrificial love defined 3. The recognised symbolic action, Of the lowly, righteous king; Known by those who knew the prophets, Sung by those who psalms would sing. 4. The declaration of a kingship; Crownless and without a court; Self defined and self denying; Freedom found and costly bought.
5.
1. Three in one and one in three; God is calling us to be Part of an eternal dance; See the hope of love advance. 2. One in three and three in one, Dance the Spirit, Father, Son, Calling us to share the love, All around, below, above. 3. Three in one and one in strife; Parent, child and breath of life. God with us in troubled days, Moving in mysterious ways. 4. One in three and three who knows; Sun and moon and wind that blows, Mother, daughter, river flows; God is seen in all of those. 5. Three in one and one in love; Tree and shoot and Holy Dove, Calling us to rest awhile, In the branches; stop to smile. 6. One in three and three in one, Ever dancing, never done, Calling us to dance and be With the God who’s one in three.
6.
1. Here in these days, O Lord most high, Pour out your Spirit on the Earth; Daughters and sons may prophesy, Young men and old may see your worth. 2. May now each human who believes, See dreams and visions of your way; All kinds of people should receive; pour out your Spirit in this day. 3. May men and women, old and young, Be witnesses to all you do, And shall your praise by all be sung, In Christ who has made all things new 4. When prophets speak in words most wise And signs are seen in humble care, Then everyone with open eyes, Will see salvation dwelling there. 5. Pour out your spirit once again; Your broken people seeking grace; Call out for freedom in your name, To share your love in every place.
7.
1. Sing to the Lord a new song, For wonderful things God has done. A good hand has brought us salvation And shared it across every nation. Think of your love for this earth; The people and all they are worth. May all of the places bear witness, To God's unforgettable goodness. 2. Shout to the Lord, every land; Explode into song every band. Make music with guitars and voices, With trumpets and other loud choices, 3. Shout out for joy to the King, And even the ocean may sing; This planet and everyone stressing, Should stop and receive this good blessing. 4. Rivers and mountains sing praise, To God who is judge of our days, Who measures the sum of our practice, And balances every injustice.
8.
1. My song is love unknown, my Saviour’s love to me, love to the loveless shown, that they might lovely be. O who am I, that for my sake my Lord should take frail flesh and die? 2. He came from his blest throne, salvation to bestow; but they made strange, and none the longed-for Christ would know. But O, my Friend, my Friend indeed, who at my need his life did spend! 3. Sometimes they strew his way, and his sweet praises sing; resounding all the day hosannas to their King. Then “Crucify!” is all their breath, and for his death they thirst and cry. 4. Why, what hath my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, he gave the blind their sight. Sweet injuries! Yet they at these themselves displease and 'gainst him rise. 5. They rise, and needs will have my dear Lord made away; a murderer they save, the Prince of Life they slay. Yet cheerful he to suffering goes, that he his foes from thence might free. 6. In life, no house, no home my Lord on earth might have; in death, no friendly tomb but what a stranger gave. What may I say? Heav'n was his home, but mine the tomb wherein he lay. 7. Here might I stay and sing, no story so divine; never was love, dear King, never was grief like thine. This is my Friend, in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend.
9.
Amongst our own dear people, Lord, Please teach us how to tell, The stories of your only son, In words of faith and love. Across this land whose ways we know, Please teach us how to move, With nothing in our pockets, Lord, But truth to share with all. Then show us how to keep your task, Forever in our sights, And never be distracted by, The obstacles we meet. O let us not come to a halt, When we may sadly fail; Not every soul is ours to win, But we can play our part. One day we'll see your glory, Lord, Your plan in all its form, And though the task has wearied us, The value will be clear. And when we stand amongst our friends, From every land and time, With all who shared the work we did, Then we shall sing as one.
10.
1. Gather your people, O Lord, from the mountains, Gather the hungry, the broken, the lost, Gather them in to the feast you're preparing, And send out your Church to the ends of the Earth. 2. Break down the structures that keep us from moving, Break down our self-centred sense of the world, Break down the walls that we're building between us, And rebuild us all in the image of you. 3. Pour out your spirit, to all who are hopeless, Pour out your life-giving blood to the world, Pour out your breath to bring life to the lifeless, And breathe in to all of us visions of love. 4. Feed us O Lord with the food that is lasting Feed us with food that is good for the soul Feed us with visions and words of your Kingdom And take from our shoulders the burdens of life
11.
1 You are the vine, We are the branches; You are the vine We remain rooted in you. You the divine, Give all of us chances, To be in the vine And live in communion with you. Chorus: If we grow In Your love And your word Lives in us, Then our lives will bear fruit, as you are the source of all life. 2 You are the vine, We are the branches; You are the vine, We remain rooted in you. You are divine, Source of our inheritance We grow in the vine, Created in likeness of you. Repeat Chorus 3 Bread and the wine, Disciples in fellowship; Bread and the wine, Sharing this moment with you. Poured out divine To broken recipients The fruit of the vine We're remade in likeness of you Repeat Chorus
12.
All people who share life on Earth sing to the Lord with cheerful voice: serve God with joy, shout out her worth; come dance before her and rejoice. The Lord, straight up, is God for real; without our help she made us all. She feeds us with the food that’s real; We answer to our home girl’s call. Through gates and ring the bell with praise; come chill at God’s own sweet style place; shout out, big up her name always; we know it’s right to share this grace. Let’s talk of why our God is good; She’s mercy all the way, for sure her truth, forever, firmly stood, and shall from age to age endure. To God the parent, spirit, son the one whom heaven and earth adore, from earthly creatures and beyond be praise and glory evermore.
13.
And can it be that I should gain an interest in the Saviour's blood? Died he for me, who caused his pain? For me, who him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? 'Tis mystery all: the Immortal dies! Who can explore his strange design? In vain the first-born seraph tries to sound the depths of love divine. 'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, let angel minds enquire no more. 'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, let angel minds enquire no more. He left his Father's throne above so free, so infinite his grace emptied himself of all but love, and bled for Adam's helpless race. 'Tis mercy all, immense and free; for, O my God, it found out me! 'Tis mercy all, immense and free; for, O my God, it found out me! Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound in sin and nature's night; thine eye diffused a quickening ray; I woke, the dungeon flamed with light. my chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed thee. my chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed thee. No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in him, is mine! Alive in him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine, bold I approach the eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ, my own. bold I approach the eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ, my own.

about

These are hymns recorded or re-mastered during my sabbatical and during the COVID 19 lockdown of 2020. Many of these recordings were produced specifically for pre-recorded online church services in the Dorset South and west Methodist Circuit, and most of them were primarily recorded as a one take live video recording. The audio was then processed, and other instrument and vocal tracks were added. Some recordings have just the one original live take.

Preparing recordings for regular Sunday mornings, creates an added sense of urgency and removes the time I might like to correct errors and polish the recording. On reflection, I am oddly pleased with some of the rough edges, so I have left the recordings mostly as they were when they first went out. I hope they are a blessing to you.

All of these hymns (Bar And Can it Be) should be available soon in my hymn book. The words and tunes written by myself are not registered with CCLI and I do not require any copyright payment for use in worship, but if you intend to us them regularly, please buy a music hymn book and perhaps some words copies for your congregation. If you wish to produce recordings or videos for financial gain you will need to seek my permission.
