This is an old broom with three new handles and two new brushes, but it would be wrong of me not to acknowledge Daniels and Rigby’s hymn of the same name as the initial inspiration for this essentially new hymn. I rewrote it to fit with my own understanding of communion theology and to reflect more closely the spirit of the John 15 reading from which both versions of the song have their origin. I shifted the emphasis from witness to others through miraculous works towards John 15's sense of discipleship and personal growth rooted in Christ. In addition, I switched the ‘abide’ which is somewhat outdated language used by several Bible translations, for ‘remain’ from the NIV, with the addition of my own choice of the word ‘rooted’. This hopefully makes the language more accessible to modern people as well as perhaps better echoing the central vine metaphor of the chapter.
